Embroidered patches are a fun way to personalize your furry family’s clothing and gear. They can be added to pet bandanas, harnesses, backpacks and other pet clothing like hoodies, jackets and pet shirts.
The most durable way to attach an embroidered patch is by sewing, especially if you intend to wash in a washing machine. If you choose to iron on your embroidered patch, check first that your fabric can take the high heat setting of your iron.
To iron-on an embroidered patch, follow these easy steps:
Heat Your Iron: Set your iron to “high” heat at approximately 350 degrees. Also indicated as the “cotton” setting on some irons. Allow the iron time to fully reach its high temperature and do not use the steam setting.
Position the Patch: Lay the garment flat on an ironing board or protected surface and position your embroidered patch on the garment facing up. Make sure the garment is clean beforehand and allow at least 1 cm of fabric around the edge of the patch.
Cover Patch: Place a thin, clean cloth over the area where you will be ironing the patch. This will help protect the fabric and patch from direct heat.
Iron the Patch: Place the heated iron over the patch and press down firmly. Do not iron back and forth, but rather apply steady, firm pressure for approximately 40 seconds. Afterwards, flip the fabric over and iron the back-side of the area for another 15 seconds.
Cool Down: Allow the garment to cool for approximately 10 minutes before handling the badge. This will help ensure the adhesive on the patch has set properly. Do not wash the garment for the first 24 hours.
Test: Carefully test the bond by lifting the edge of the patch or gently tugging on the edges of the patch. If the patch is still loose, repeat steps 4-5 again.
Optional: Stitch the embroidered patch in place by sewing onto the fabric along the border. You can use a whip, running or back stitch to secure.
And that's it! When laundering, hand wash the garment in cold water and air dry. If you wish to wash in a washing machine, reinforce the embroidered patch by sewing it in place. This will ensure the patch is extra durable for machine washing and heavy use.
